Cholera Outbreak Worsens Across the Country

The DRC is experiencing its worst cholera outbreak in 25 years, with over 64,000 infections and nearly 1,900 deaths since January. The outbreak is active in 17 of the country’s 26 provinces except: Bas-Uélé, Haut-Uélé, Ituri, Tshopo, Mongala, Tshuapa, Mai-Ndombe, Kwilu, and Kwango. The UN International Children's Emergency Fund warns that cases are expected to continue rising into the coming weeks due to poor sanitation, contaminated water sources, and population displacement.   Advice:

  • Avoid non-essential travel to outbreak-affected provinces.
  • Drink only bottled, boiled, or chlorinated water and eat only fully cooked food; avoid raw produce and street food.
