Power Outages in Santo Domingo Due to Hurricane Erin Winds

Temporary Closure of Carrasco International Airport

Carrasco International Airport will be closed from 9 a.m. Tuesday, August 19, until 9 a.m. Thursday, August 21, due to improvement works on its Instrument Landing System (ILS). Flooding Disruption in Sironko District

Heavy rains in Sironko District have caused significant destruction, resulting in one confirmed death due to drowning in Nalugugu. The flooding has destroyed homes, washed away crops, and left hundreds of residents stranded without food or shelter. The floods have also cut off the Nalugugu Bridge in Bukise Sub-county, Paralyzing Traffic along the Sironko–Kapchorwa–Karamoja highway and the Kapchorwa–Mbale highway.   Advice: Avoid travel in and around Sironko District due to blocked highways and a collapsed bridge. There is a detour of approximately 1 kilometer to bypass the damaged road. Monitor local radio, government announcements, and Uganda National Meteorological Authority for real-time updates. Keep emergency supplies, important documents, and valuables in waterproof storage.

West Nile Virus Activity Increasing

Health authorities report increasing cases of West Nile virus in both Greece and Italy, with activity spreading across many regions. The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and can cause fever, rash, or in rare cases, severe neurological illness.   Advice: - Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, or IR3535. - Wear long sleeves and trousers, especially during dawn and dusk. - Stay in air-conditioned or screened accommodations. - Avoid standing water areas where mosquitoes breed. - Seek medical care immediately if you develop symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, seizures, or muscle weakness.

Train Cancellations on Gorakhpur–Gonda Railway Section

Volcanic Activity at Mount Etna

Italy’s volcano observatory (INGV) reports increasing activity at Mount Etna. A new vent opened on August 14, releasing steady lava flows down the southern slope, reaching around 2400 m elevation. Small bursts of lava and glowing rocks are also being thrown from the summit, along with occasional light ash clouds.   Advice: - Stay away from the summit area and southern slopes where lava is flowing. - Be cautious of falling ash or small rocks in nearby areas. - Use a mask or cover your mouth/nose if ash is present. - Follow updates from INGV, civil protection, and local authorities.
