Mosquito-Borne Disease Alert

Informative

Country: Australia

Location: Southeast Queensland

The Queensland Department of Health has reported a notable rise in mosquito-borne diseases, including 46 cases of malaria and 124 cases of dengue fever between January 1 and March 30, 2025. Of the dengue cases, 111 were acquired overseas, while the remainder are being monitored for potential local transmission. Health officials attribute the increase to flooding across Southeast Queensland, which has led to standing water ideal for mosquito breeding. Although infection rates are expected to decline as floodwaters recede, continued vigilance is advised.   Advice: - Use EPA-approved mosquito repellents, especially during dawn and dusk when mosquito activity is highest. - Wear long-sleeved clothing and light-colored garments to reduce the risk of bites. - Remove standing water around homes, including in buckets, plant pots, and drains, to minimize breeding grounds. - Monitor updates from the Queensland Department of Health and local authorities regarding mosquito control measures. - Travelers returning from tropical areas should seek medical advice if experiencing symptoms such as fever, chills, joint pain, or rash.

Border Control Alert

Informative

Country: Romania

Location: Hungary–Romania Border

Romania has implemented emergency border controls at crossings with Hungary due to recent foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreaks in Hungary, Slovakia, and Germany. While the disease poses no threat to humans, authorities have introduced precautionary health and veterinary checks to prevent its spread into Romanian territory. These new controls include the establishment of checkpoints on key entry routes, vehicle screenings, and farm-related disinfection procedures. The reinstatement of these measures follows concerns that Romania’s recent entry into the Schengen Area may be accelerating cross-border transmission risks.   Advice: - Expect delays at the Hungary–Romania border due to enhanced inspections and health screening protocols. - Plan for longer travel times and consider using major crossing points, where processing may be better organized. - Avoid transporting agricultural materials or animal-related goods, which may be subject to stricter scrutiny or seizure. - Stay informed through the Romanian Border Police (www.politiadefrontiera.ro) and local authorities for real-time updates and alternative route options. - If traveling for tourism or business, reconfirm transit and transport plans, particularly near rural or agricultural zones.
