Travel Advisory

Caution

Country: Maldives

Location: Maldives

Australia’s Smartraveller has updated its advice for holidaymakers, urging travellers to “exercise a high degree of caution” in the Maldives due to the risk of civil unrest and the ongoing threat of terrorism. Public demonstrations may occur in greater Malé and other inhabited islands, and can turn violent with little warning. While resort islands are generally peaceful and secure, terrorism could occur anywhere in the country at any time. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) maintains a “level two” travel warning, advising Australians to pay close attention to personal security and the health situation. Approximately 34,000 Australians visited the Maldives in 2023. No specific incidents have been reported, but the security environment could change rapidly.   Advice: - Exercise a high degree of caution throughout the Maldives, especially in greater Malé and populated islands. Avoid areas impacted by demonstrations and follow local authority instructions. - Resort islands remain generally secure, but remain vigilant and stay in contact with your airline operator for travel updates. - Avoid known flashpoints, refuse unexpected packages or offers, and monitor local news for emerging risks. - Stay clear of public protests and large gatherings, as these can escalate quickly. - Maintain regular contact with family or friends and keep copies of travel documents secure. - For up-to-date information, consult Smartraveller (www.smartraveller.gov.au) and the Australian High Commission in the Maldives. - In an emergency, contact local authorities or the Australian Consular Emergency Centre at +61 2 6261 3305.
