Heavy rain forces evacuations and raises flood and landslide risk

Informative

Country: China

Location: Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces

Heavy rain between August 2 and 3 triggered eight geological disasters in Sichuan Province and led to the evacuation of 40,249 residents from high-risk areas. Up to 192 millimeters of rain was recorded within 24 hours in parts of Guang’an. Further rainfall may trigger flash floods, landslides and sudden road closures, particularly in mountainous areas, river valleys and routes leading to tourist attractions. Travelers may face disrupted access to remote communities, hiking areas and scenic sites in Sichuan and Shaanxi. Advice: Avoid mountain roads, river valleys and hiking routes during and after heavy rain. Check road conditions, tourist-site closures and local transport services before departure. Heavy rain raises flood, landslide and travel disruption risk

Informative

Country: Nepal

Location: Across Nepal, particularly mountainous and low-lying areas

Nepal’s monsoon is expected to remain active for the next three days, with heavy and locally very heavy rain possible in several regions. Authorities have warned of rising river levels, flash floods, landslides, lightning, and disruptions to roads, trekking routes, and daily transport, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas. Nighttime traffic has been suspended from 19:00 to 05:00 on the Beni–Jomsom and Beni–Darbang roads due to the heavy-rain forecast. The Beni–Jomsom route is a major tourist corridor connecting travelers with Jomsom, Muktinath and the Kali Gandaki region. Additional road closures and domestic-flight delays may occur with little notice if rainfall intensifies. Advice: * Avoid trekking, river crossings, waterfalls and steep slopes during heavy rain. * Check road and domestic-flight status before traveling between Kathmandu, Pokhara, Chitwan, Jomsom and mountain regions. * Avoid nighttime road travel and do not enter flooded or landslide-affected roads. * Follow DHM warnings and instructions from local authorities.

Major wildfires continue west of Athens and on Greek islands

Informative

Country: Greece

Location: Western Attica and adjacent Boeotia, especially Psatha, Porto Germeno and the Megara area; Kefalonia and parts of Crete

A major wildfire west and northwest of Athens has forced more than 1,000 people to evacuate and destroyed over 100 homes. Nearly 500 firefighters, five water-dropping aircraft and five helicopters have been deployed. Two aerial firefighters were killed when two firefighting helicopters collided near Psatha during operations. Winds have eased somewhat, improving firefighting conditions, but high temperatures and dry vegetation continue to create an elevated risk of renewed fire spread. Separate fires and evacuations have also been reported on Kefalonia and Crete. Smoke, emergency road closures, coastal access restrictions and new 112 evacuation alerts may disrupt travel with little notice. Advice: * Avoid Psatha, Porto Germeno, the affected areas near Megara and all active evacuation zones. * Check road access, ferry services, and accommodation availability before traveling in western Attica, Kefalonia, or Crete. * Keep phones charged and follow 112 emergency alerts; evacuate immediately if instructed. * Do not enter smoke-covered or closed roads and limit outdoor exposure in areas affected by heavy smoke.

Extreme heat strains power, water and river transport

Informative

Country: Hungary

Location: Nationwide, including Budapest, the Danube region and Lake Balaton

Hungary’s highest-level public health heat alert remains in effect nationwide until midnight on August 4. Temperatures are expected to approach 41°C in parts of the country, creating a significant risk during sightseeing, festivals and prolonged outdoor activities. Extreme heat and drought have reduced Danube water levels, disrupting river cruises and water supplies in more than 100 locations. The low water level has also sharply reduced output at the Paks nuclear power plant, increasing pressure on the electricity network, although widespread mandatory power cuts have not been announced. Advice: * Avoid strenuous outdoor activity between 11:00 and 16:00. * Carry water and take regular breaks in shaded or air-conditioned places. * Check Danube cruise schedules and local water restrictions before departure. * Prepare for possible transport or service disruptions if pressure on the power grid increases.

Wildfires threaten major travel routes in California

Informative

Country: USA

Location: Northern California, North Coast and Eastern Sierra

Earthquake injures 26 and forces 300 evacuations near Naples

Informative

Country: Italy

Location: Pozzuoli, Campi Flegrei and western Naples

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Campi Flegrei volcanic area at approximately 19:46 local time on July 31. The shallow earthquake occurred at a depth of around three kilometers and was felt across Naples, Ischia and the Sorrento Peninsula. At least 26 people were injured, with no fatalities reported. Around 300 residents were evacuated while emergency teams inspected damaged buildings. At least nine buildings were reportedly declared unsafe, part of another building collapsed and a temporary shelter with 185 beds was opened in Pozzuoli. Approximately 60 aftershocks were recorded, including a magnitude 3.1 tremor. Landslides, power outages and damage to the Pozzuoli pier caused localized transport and ferry disruptions. Train travel is also affected by the existing closure of the Napoli Campi Flegrei–Pozzuoli Solfatara rail section, where replacement buses are operating. Campi Flegrei remains at yellow volcanic alert level, indicating monitoring parameters above normal levels but not an imminent eruption warning. Advice: Avoid damaged buildings, cliffs, waterfront areas and all locations closed by emergency services. Expect further aftershocks and move away from building façades, balconies and unstable slopes if shaking occurs. Check ferry, rail, metro and road services before traveling between Naples, Pozzuoli and the nearby islands. Follow instructions from Italian Civil Protection and monitor INGV updates
