Heightened security and possible travel delays continue around Ceuta

Informative

Country: Morocco

Location: Ceuta and the nearby Spain–Morocco border area

Security remains reinforced in Ceuta following the mass arrival of more than 50,000 migrants from Morocco. At least 72 people died during the crossings and chaotic conditions, while more than 1,000 required medical assistance. Most migrants have since returned to Morocco, and authorities report that order has largely been restored. Spanish authorities have installed a 500-meter floating barrier and continue enhanced patrols and controls around the Tarajal border. Local protests, counterprotests and renewed security restrictions may cause temporary roadblocks, longer checks and delays on routes connecting Ceuta, the border and the port. Ferry services have not been generally suspended. Advice: Avoid the Tarajal border area, demonstrations, large gatherings and active security operations. Check border, road, port and ferry updates before traveling through Ceuta or Algeciras. Allow additional time for security checks and possible temporary road restrictions. Jewish and Israeli travelers should exercise discretion near demonstrations and avoid displaying national or religious symbols in tense or crowded areas
