A severe heatwave continues to affect much of Italy, with the Health Ministry placing many cities under the highest-level heat alert. temperatures around 35–37°C and a high health risk during peak heat hours. The heatwave may affect outdoor activity, urban travel, public transport, and travelers without reliable cooling. Thunderstorms, hail and strong winds may develop from Wednesday as conditions begin to change, particularly in parts of northern Italy.

A fatal shooting occurred on today in Stade, Lower Saxony, leaving five people dead and several others injured. Police launched a major operation in the Dankersstraße area and later reported that two suspects, including the suspected shooter, had been arrested. Authorities stated that there is no further danger to the public, though the police operation and investigation are ongoing.

Continuous rainfall has triggered landslides and flooding in Sankhuwasabha District, blocking roads and local trails, damaging bridges and infrastructure, and cutting off access to several villages. Residents from several settlements have moved to safer areas, while electricity, internet and communication services have also been disrupted. Further rainfall may increase the risk of additional landslides, flash floods and travel disruption in the area.

Sri Lanka is reporting a sharp rise in dengue cases during the monsoon season. Health authorities reported 49,025 cases in 2026 as of June 24, including 29 deaths. June alone recorded 15,184 cases, with Western Province accounting for over half of all cases. Travelers face increased risk of mosquito-borne illness, especially in urban, coastal and wet areas. Advice: * Use mosquito repellent throughout the day, wear long clothing, and sleep in screened or air-conditioned rooms. * Avoid areas with standing water. * Seek medical care if you develop a high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle/joint pain, nausea, vomiting, rash, or unusual weakness. * Seek urgent care for severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, extreme tiredness or worsening symptoms after the fever drops.

A prolonged heat wave is expected to affect large areas of the central and eastern United States this week, with rising temperatures and high humidity towards the end of the American Independence Day weekend on July 4. Temperatures are expected to reach up to 44 degrees Celsius. The heat wave may lead to disruptions in transportation, health services, and flights.

A magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Sichuan, China, causing significant shaking felt over a large area. The event occurred at a depth of 10 km.

Bus drivers in Rio de Janeiro are expected to go on indefinite strike starting June 29, following a breakdown in wage negotiations between the transport workers’ union and public transport operators. The strike is expected to affect city bus services across the city and could cause significant disruptions, including long wait times, congestion on alternative modes of transport, increased demand for taxis and shuttle services, and delays on major routes.

A scheduled water outage lasting approximately 24 hours is expected to affect parts of Cape Town from 11AM on June 29 to 10AM on June 30 while water infrastructure is inspected. It may take some time for water to be fully and consistently restored even after the work is complete.
